The CEWE PHOTO SHOW is the central program module used to edit your photos.
You can use it to improve a photo, e.g. to correct over- or underexposure, weak contrast, colour tinges or red-eye.
You can apply effects to your photo, e.g. turn it into a black-and-white picture, age it with a sepia effect or make it look like an oil painting or a drawing.
You can distort, reflect and turn a photo, and much more besides.
And you can manage your photos using the CEWE PHOTO SHOW, rating your photos and adding titles and comments and filtering them according to these and other meta data (in order to show only certain pictures).
The CEWE PHOTO SHOW can be launched in two different operating modes.
Firstly as a standalone program and secondly with limited menus as a support application within the "Müller foto svet" editor.
If you run the CEWE photo show as a standalone program, it offers several commands that are not necessary if it is used as a support application.
For example, you can edit several images in a row, navigate within directories, search for and rate photos, and carry out several other commands that are only relevant within the context of a standalone program.
If, however, you open a specific photo for editing by double-clicking on it in the editor workspace (in a page layout), you do not need some of the menus or commands.
This is because you will only want to edit a specific image and then return to the editor.
In this case, for the sake of clarity, the menus and commands that are not required are simply not shown when the support application is launched, rather than being "greyed out".
When you install the "Müller foto svet" software, an icon will appear on the desktop and a program will be created in the start menu, both of which you can use to launch the CEWE PHOTO SHOW.
The "CEWE PHOTO SHOW" command is also available if you click on the pop-up menu of a photo file in the Workspace/Explorer of the operating system.
Click on this command to launch the CEWE PHOTO SHOW and open the photo in the PHOTO SHOW.
Double-clicking on the photo thumbnail in the selection area of the "Müller foto svet" software will also launch the CEWE PHOTO SHOW as a standalone program.
Double-click on a photo that has been added to the editor workspace (a page layout) and the CEWE PHOTO SHOW will open as a support application.
You can also find a command to this effect in the photo's pop-up menu.
The photo is then displayed in large format in the CEWE PHOTO SHOW.
|
When you are editing a photo with the CEWE PHOTO SHOW, it is only a copy of the original photo that is opened and edited. The original photo is therefore not marked as used. |

Caution! The photo that you have edited will be saved temporarily in the same directory as the original. If you want to keep the original photo, please use the "Save image as" button, and save the edited photo with a new file name. If you do not like the changes to your photo, please use the "Discard changes" button. Then the temporary file is deleted again. A similar dialogue window will appear if you select a different photo in the image storyboard or close the CEWE PHOTO SHOW without saving the edited photo. |
Once you have opened the CEWE PHOTO SHOW as a standalone program, it will start by displaying a directory tree in the options dialogue.
You can use this to navigate within the data carriers and directories on your computer.
Click on the tool icon "Show directory tree" to open or close the options dialogue box with the directory tree.
This icon is not available if the photo has been opened from the "Müller foto svet" workspace!
The first photo file in the selected directory will always be shown first in the workspace. If the image storyboard is turned on, thumbnails of all the photo files in the directory will be listed for you to scroll through.
Click on the photo file in the directory tree or the thumbnail in the image storyboard to load the associated photo into the workspace.
Alternatively, you can open a file via the menu command "File" ⇒ "Load image" on the menu bar.
The "File" command contains other commands for saving and deleting files.
|
The directory tree and "File" menu item will only appear if the CEWE PHOTO SHOW has been launched as a standalone program. |
To open a photo in the CEWE PHOTO SHOW from within the "Müller foto svet" software, double-click on it.

Meta data is information that is saved in the photo file but not shown in the photo itself.
This includes the EXIF data, e.g. the camera manufacturer, the camera model and the date the photo was taken, which is saved by the photo camera.
Meta data also includes additional information which you can enter and edit yourself, such as a title, the name of the photographer and comments.
This meta data can be used to manage photos, but not all fields need to be filled in.
This meta data is entered and edited in the Options dialogue.
The Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) is an international standard for saving meta data in digital photos.
You can display and partially edit the following meta data in the CEWE PHOTO SHOW:
Changes to the meta data are saved to the photo straight away, unless they are set elsewhere in the Program Settings.
The "File properties" are determined by the operating system.
Apart from "Date taken", they can only be displayed here, not modified.
With the "Adjust batch" tab, you can automatically apply metadata changes to all photos in the same directory as the open photo.
Activate the desired functions by ticking the relevant checkboxes.
The "Move date time" function enables you to change the date taken and/or time taken of all photos in a directory.
This function is useful if you want to synchronise the capture data of two cameras, for example, which is very important when working with the CEWE PHOTOBOOK Assistant.
Imagine you have photos of an event, e.g. a wedding, taken by two different cameras, and one camera has the wrong time or even the wrong date.
The CEWE PHOTOBOOK Assistant orders the photos by time taken, so an incorrect time setting would disrupt the chronological sequence of the photos and the photos would appear in the wrong order in the photo book.
If you have saved the photos for each camera separately in two different directories, then you can use this function to change the capture time of all the photos on one of the cameras at the same time, e.g. to advance it by one hour, if you had standard time rather than daylight saving time set on one of the cameras.
The function "Recording correct data" performs a similar function. You can find this under the menu item "Edit".
It can be set precisely via filters, and is intuitive to use, even if a directory contains photos from several cameras.
Click on the button "Apply to all photos" and the meta data of the photos in the directory is changed.

This enables you to use the meta data to search for specific photos.
The photos are filtered by meta data that fulfil all the criteria entered.
Photos that do not meet these criteria are no longer displayed in the image storyboard.
The search terms for meta data filtering are entered into the Options dialogue.
Click on the "Apply" button and the photo display is filtered in the image storyboard.
Now only photos that fulfil all the meta data criteria will be shown.
Click on the "Reset" button and the filter criteria will be deleted and all the photos in the selected directory displayed once more in the image storyboard.

In the photo effects area you will find several options to artistically enhance your photo.
You are not limited to one choice:
Multiple effects can be applied to the same photo one after the other.
If you do not like the result of an effect, you can undo it.
The button for this is at the bottom of the effects options dialogue.

This distorts the photo into an arc or circle segment.
You can adjust the size of the circle segments by changing the size of the arc. If the control is to the far left, the photo will not be distorted at all. If it is precisely in the centre, the photo will turn into a semicircle. If it is to the far right, the photo will be turned 360° into a full circle.
You can turn the arc around its axis by means of the rotation angle. If the control is in the centre, the photo is upside down.
And you can adjust the width of the arc by means of the inner and outer radius settings. If the control for the inner radius is set to the far left (i.e. 0), the arc turns into a sector of a circle (cake slice).

Using a selection frame, you can crop the image in a fixed aspect ratio or you can set a custom cropping area.
With the fixed aspect ratios 3:2 and 4:3 (landscape) and 2:3 and 3:4 (portrait), the selection frame is set to these aspect ratios.
If you change the height of the frame by moving the corner points with the mouse, you will automatically change the width and vice-versa.
If you set a custom cropping area, you can specify the section as you wish.
Click on the scissors icon in the options dialogue to crop the image.
Using the icons in the options dialogue, you can flip the photo around the horizontal axis of reflection (turn it upside down) or the vertical axis of reflection (turn it on its side).
By clicking on the rotation icons, you can rotate the photo 90° clockwise, 90° anti-clockwise or 180°.
The size of the photo is shown in pixels.
To change the size of the photo, please enter the new dimensions in the fields under "New".
If the checkbox "Retain aspect ratio" is ticked, the new height will change in the same aspect ratio if you enter a new width and the new width will change if you enter a new height.
The entry field for the aspect ratio can then not be changed.
Click on "OK" and the photo will be recalculated in the given dimensions.

Here you can choose various program settings.
The cache is the amount of RAM on your computer available to the CEWE PHOTO SHOW for displaying and analysing photos.
A small amount minimises memory usage but slows the CEWE PHOTO SHOW down.
A large amount gives the CEWE PHOTO SHOW a faster processing speed.
However, this might slow down other programs running on your computer at the same time.
Set the size of the cache to between 256 and 1024 MB.
If you have less than 256 MB of RAM, the hard drive is accessed constantly, in particular with large photo files, which slows the computer down.
On the other hand, a lot of RAM is helpful and speeds up the scroll speed in the image storyboard in particular.
However, computer operating systems often cannot allocate more than 1024 MB.
This is the directory that is opened in the directory tree when you start the CEWE PHOTO SHOW.
The photo files in this directory are then displayed in the image storyboard.
Click on the "Select directory" button and a dialogue opens up in which you can browse for a directory.
This is the directory in which the CEWE PHOTO SHOW saves the edited photos with the file command "Copy this photo into the directory".
If you do not enter a directory, the photos are usually saved in the default image directory indicated.
Click on the "Select directory" button and a dialogue opens up in which you can browse for a directory.
You can view the photos in the currently open directory one after another in a self-running slide show. (more on this below).
Enter the time in seconds that each photo should be shown for.
You can use this checkbox to specify whether the meta data of a photo should be saved immediately after it has been changed, or only by activating the "Save" command when you choose a different photo or when you close the CEWE PHOTO SHOW.
If this checkbox is ticked, you do not need to save the photo in order for its meta data to be transferred.
Click on "Apply" and the program settings are saved and active.
A dialogue to this effect also appears if you navigate away from the program settings without applying them.

"Red eyes" often occur on photos taken in dark surroundings with a flash. The problem is that the flash causes the fundus of the eye of the person in the photograph to be illuminated by the wide-open pupil, producing an unpleasant effect.
This function searches automatically throughout the whole photo for round red pixel areas and darkens them.
This is a good function for correcting red eye, even on several people on a single photo at one time.
There is however the danger that other red areas in the photo will be darkened too.
This option enables you to draw a selection window in the photo, which limits the correction to the selected area.
Only round red pixel areas in the selected area will be detected and darkened.
There is no risk that red areas will be darkened elsewhere in the photo.
Click directly on the red eye in the photo with the mouse pointer. You can zoom into the photo to do this.
Only the red pixels near to the selected point will be darkened. This means you have to do this for every red eye individually.
However, it is the safest method to correct red eye reliably.
Click on "Correct now" to apply red-eye correction.

With the "Recording correct data" function, you can correct a time difference between the photos taken by two cameras.
You can use this to synchronise the date and time of photos taken with different cameras and/or in different directories.
This is very important when working with the CEWE PHOTOBOOK Assistant.
Imagine you have photos of an event, e.g. a wedding, taken by two different cameras, and one camera has the wrong time or even the wrong date.
The CEWE PHOTOBOOK Assistant sorts the photos by time taken, so an incorrect time setting would disrupt the chronological sequence of the photos and the photos would appear in the wrong order in the photo book.
In the "Recording correct data" dialogue, the upper window shows those photos that probably have the correct time setting.
The lower window shows those photos that need to be amended.
To select photos, both window halves have a directory tree to help you select the directory and a filter to narrow down the selection of the photos.
Ideally, the photos from both cameras should be saved in separate directories. Then you only need to select the corresponding directories in the directory trees at the top and bottom.
However, if they are in the same directory, you can separate the photos from the two cameras using the filters, provided the camera used is not the same model.
Simply set the filter at the top to the manufacturer and camera model used to take the photos that have the right time. Below, set the filter to the manufacturer and camera model used to take the photos that need to be amended.
It is best if you search at the top and bottom for photos that were probably taken at around the same time.
Staying with the example of a wedding: It is not unlikely that both cameras caught the shot of the bride and groom kissing at the altar or cutting the cake.
If you have two similar photos on different cameras it is likely they were taken at the same time.
Highlight both these photos, one at the top and one below. The top photo then has a red border and the time taken will not be changed. The bottom photo has a green border and the date and time taken will be changed to match the top photo. The date and time of all photos in the lower image storyboard will be amended by the time difference between the top and bottom photo.
Click on the "Apply" button in the bottom right-hand corner to synchronise the photo data.
The photos are then in the correct chronological order. (You can then display them according to date taken in the CEWE PHOTO SHOW.)
Then close the dialogue by clicking on the small "X" in the top right or by clicking on "Cancel". You can "Cancel" safely if you have clicked "Apply" beforehand.

This provides the opportunity to create a keyword index.
In the keyword index, you can add terms to a shortlist in order to unify your keywords and to ensure you do not use different keywords with the same or similar meaning by mistake.
Example: "For example, "Holiday", "Vacation" and "Travel" may refer to the same event. To ensure you do not need to search for all three keywords later on, you should limit yourself to one keyword in this case.
The keyword index helps with this. You can use it to create a list of keywords. You can select keywords for your photo from this list.
It will help you achieve better and more comprehensive results when you come to search by keyword at a later stage.
The existing keywords are displayed in the "keyword index" at the top.

With the "Recording correct data" function, you can synchronise a time difference between the photos taken by two cameras.
You can use this to synchronise the date and time of photos taken with different cameras and/or in different directories.
This is very important for image selection using the CEWE PHOTOBOOK Assistant, for example.
Double-click on a keyword to automatically add it to the current photo.
You can add a new keyword to the keyword index by entering it in the small text field and clicking on the button with the "+" symbol.
You can remove a keyword from the keyword index by putting it in the small text field and clicking on the button with the "-" symbol.
You can add a keyword from the keyword index to all photos in the currently open directory by highlighting it in the keyword catalogue and clicking on the "Add" button.
To remove a keyword from all photos in the currently open directory, highlight it in the lower "Current photos" text field and click on the "Remove" button.
Opens the corresponding dialogue in the options dialogue.
The "Effects" menu contains the same functions as described above under the "Open photo effects menu" tool icon.
Not available if the photo has been opened from the "Müller foto svet" workspace!
You can use this search function to carry out a precise search for specific photos on your computer.
The only requirement is that the meta data of your photos contains corresponding keywords or search terms.
You can find details on meta data and searching in meta data above in the paragraphs on the "Show and edit meta data" and "Search meta data of loaded images" tool icons.
